Questions about this piece
What can you hang an ornament on besides a tree?
More places than people try. A cabinet knob, a drawer pull, a wreath, the arm of a lamp, a bare branch set in a vase, a rearview mirror, the corner of a mirror frame — anywhere a loop will sit. Whether one works outside the holidays comes down to whether it reads as a holiday object or just as a small piece of art, and a dolphin cut from wood lands on the second side of that line. It can stay up all year without looking like something you forgot to put away.
What does printing straight onto wood look like, next to a sticker or a photo insert?
The image sits in the surface instead of on top of it. Ink laid directly on wood soaks in slightly, so the grain stays visible through the lighter parts of the picture and the whole thing has a matte finish rather than a shine. It also means you can't peel the image off — there's nothing to peel. What is on the front is as permanent as the wood it's on. The trade is that pale colors go a little warmer, since the wood underneath is not white. The map here is printed that way.
Is the map on this one fixed, or do you choose the location?
You choose it. The map printed inside the dolphin is made for a location you pick — a town, a stretch of coast, a group or a business — so two of these can be the same shape and still be about completely different places. That's what the metal compass charm hanging beside it is signaling: the dolphin tells you it's the water, and the map tells you which water. It hangs on a jute rope, and the design work is done in-house.
