Questions about this piece
What does 18k gold plated mean?
A thin layer of real gold bonded over a base metal underneath, rather than gold running all the way through. The 18k describes the purity of that outer layer, 18 parts gold out of 24, and not how much gold is in the earring overall, which is the part that confuses people. On the scale of gold jewelry it sits below gold filled and well below solid gold, and that is the whole reason a plated pair costs what it does. These hoops are 18k gold plated.
What size hoop earrings should you get?
Hoops are sold by diameter in millimeters, and translating that number is where most people get caught out shopping online. Roughly: 20mm is just over three quarters of an inch across, about the width of a penny; 30 to 40mm is the mid-size hoop; and past 50mm you are into the two-inch hoops that read as the main thing you have on. Hold a coin up to your earlobe and you will learn more in five seconds than any product photograph will tell you. These are 20mm, the small end of that range.
Are these smooth hoops, or is there a texture to them?
There is a texture. These are bead hoops, so the gold is formed into a row of small beads running around the band instead of one smooth tube, and that ridged surface is what you notice standing close to someone. They are hypoallergenic and made without nickel or lead, and they are light. Each pair arrives on a branded earring card, so it can be handed over as a gift without you hunting for a box first.
