Questions about this piece
Do you wear socks with loafers?
Both are fine, and the choice changes the shoe more than you would expect. Bare, a loafer reads as a warm-weather shoe and puts the whole foot and ankle on show. With a sock that shows, it goes the other way and reads tailored, which is the version that holds up under pants. If you want neither look, a no-show sock stops your foot sliding around inside. Since this one slips on with nothing to tighten, what you put on your foot also changes how snug it feels.
How should loafers fit?
Snug across the instep, with your heel barely lifting as you walk. A loafer has no lace to take up slack, so the band over the top of the foot is the only thing holding it on, and a pair that feels roomy in the shop will be slipping at the heel by evening. Leather gives across the width over the first few wears but it does not give in length, so buy for length and let the width settle. These run in whole sizes 6 through 10.
What are these made of, and what is the sole like?
A smooth leather upper over a thin rubber outsole. The rubber is the part worth knowing about: a leather sole stays slick until it scuffs in, while rubber grips from the first wear, so there is no breaking-in period before you trust them on a tile floor or a painted stair. Keeping it thin is what holds the shoe to its low, flat line instead of lifting it onto a visible platform. Above that sit the two details that make it a penny loafer: the strap across the front and a squared toe. Beige or espresso.
