Questions about this piece
What does the ounce weight on denim mean?
It is the weight of a square yard of the fabric, and it tells you how the denim is going to behave. Under about 12 oz is light and soft from the first wear. Twelve to sixteen is the midweight range most jeans and shorts sit in. Above that you are into rigid denim that takes real wearing to break in. Heavier denim also holds a shape rather than draping. These are 14 oz, so they stand away from the leg a little and soften as you go.
Should you cuff denim shorts or leave the hem alone?
It depends what the hem is doing. A raw or frayed edge is meant to be seen, and rolling it hides the frayed part and puts a band of extra bulk across the widest part of the thigh. A clean finished hem is the one that cuffs well, because the fold then looks deliberate. A frayed hem is better left down, and it will shed a little more with each wash before it settles. These have a frayed hem, so they belong in the leave-it-alone camp.
What sizes do these shorts come in?
Waist 23 through 28, and that is the waist in inches rather than a dress size. The denim is 100% cotton with nothing stretchy blended in, which makes the number literal - there is no give to borrow if you land between two sizes. The rise is high, so measure where you actually want the waistband to sit instead of going by a pair that sits lower on you. The fly is buttons rather than a zipper, so the front lies flat under a tucked-in top.
