Questions about this piece
What is stretch twill?
Twill is a weave, not a fiber. The threads cross on a diagonal you can see running across the surface, and that structure gives the cloth a dense face that resists creasing and holds a pressed edge. Stretch twill is the same weave with a small amount of elastic fiber in it, so the cloth gives when you sit or reach and comes back. That combination is why this set can be cut with a tailored line through the vest and still move with you.
Can you wear a vest on its own, with nothing underneath?
It depends on how the vest was built. One meant as a layer has a deep armhole and an open side seam that shows whatever is under it, so it needs a shirt beneath. One drafted as a top closes high and fits through the armhole, and nothing has to go under it. This vest is the second kind, sleeveless and high at the neck with a zipper up the front, so it carries the top half on its own, with its own pants or with jeans.
Where do the pants hit?
They are high-waisted and cropped with a wide leg, so the hem lands above the ankle instead of breaking over your shoe. That is what makes the set work with a boot, since the whole shaft stays visible rather than disappearing under a puddle of fabric, and with a flat sandal you get the same clean line at the ankle. Cropping is also what keeps a wide leg from reading heavy, because the volume stops before it reaches the floor.
