Questions about this piece
What do top, middle and base notes mean on a candle?
They're the order you smell things in, not a list of ingredients. Top notes are the lightest and reach you first, in the minute or two after you light it. Middle notes fill in once the wax pool opens up, and they carry most of the time the candle is burning. Base notes are the heaviest, come up last, and linger in a room after you put it out. This one opens on hot cider, settles into cinnamon and cloves, and finishes on apple and nutmeg.
Why does my candle smoke and leave black marks on the jar?
Almost always a long wick, a draft, or both. A wick that has grown past a quarter inch feeds the flame more fuel than it can burn clean, and the leftover carbon goes up as soot and settles on the glass. Moving air does the same thing by making the flame flicker and gutter. Trim the wick before every lighting, and set the candle away from a vent, a fan or a doorway people walk through. There are 70-plus hours of wax in this jar, so the wick will want trimming many times over before you reach the bottom.
How big is the jar, and does it come with a lid?
It holds 15 ounces of wax, 334 grams, in a jar measuring 3.25 by 3.63 by 4 inches, and a wood lid comes with it. Four inches tall is short enough to sit on a nightstand or under a shelf without the flame reaching anything above it. The lid is the part people underrate: cap it between burns and the wax stays clean, so what you smell on the next lighting is hot cider rather than the dust that settled on it. When the wax is gone, the matte brown jar washes out and keeps going.
